“If you like it then you should've put a ring on it.” // Beyoncé aka Queen Bey

We all know the immortal words of the ever wise Beyoncé. If you like it. Then you should put a ring on it. I’m happy to say that I get to photograph TONS of couples who have put a ring on it. And if they haven’t they’re still in awesome relationships regardless. Engagement sessions are so much fun and in my opinion extremely important. I get a chance to get to know you. You get a chance to get to know me. We get to talk, take pictures, hang out. And you walk away with awesome photos of you where you’re in normal people clothes and not a big white dress and a tux. It’s a win-win-win situation! I love love love engagement sessions because I have more time to be creative and create some awesome photos for people.

So, if you’ve been following my countdown, welcome back. And if not, welcome to the second installment. Let’s get right to it then, huh?

Pendleton Falls Park Fishing Engagement Session // Kerri & Jonny

Two less fish in the lake.

There will be two less fish in the lake later this month when Kerri + Jonny tie the knot at The Barn at Hawk’s Point on September 20th. Despite their short engagement, the three of us found the time to get together and capture some photos of their love in honor of their engagement. Kerri and Jonny share and affinity for the outdoors, so it was only logical that we found a way to incorporate a few of their favorite past times into their engagement session. When Kerri told me they wanted to show off their love for fishing I just knew that we had to go to my favorite local park in Pendleton, Falls Park.

Brebeuf Jesuit High School Sweethearts Engagement Session // Brittany & Cody

FOOTBALL FIELDS AND PIGGY BACK RIDES, IT'S HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART TIME.

They met in their freshman year of high school at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis during orientation, Spanish class to be exact. In a pre-cell phone era, Cody asked Brittany for her AIM Instant Messenger name that day. Cody played football and while Brittany was attended a game with her friends Cody met her in the bleachers to “ask her out.”

They started dating September 1st, 2006 but it was their family cruise during Christmas 2014 where Cody created an elaborate plan to propose to Brittany. By setting up a speaker playing their favorite song, Jack Johnson’s “Better Together”, along with a box full of pictures and a note telling her to put on a fancy dress and meet her parents in the atrium. She quickly found more family members with more notes he had written letters for each member of their families with different memories they shared. Through a scavenger hunt type adventure she finally reached the final letter telling her to him on the top deck of the ship where he proposed with the sun setting!

Downtown Indianapolis Central Library Engagement // Lindsey & Eric

HISTORIC LIBRARIES, SUNSET ON ROOFTOPS, AND THE GREAT CIRCLE CITY

Upon discovering that Lindsey + Eric were going to utilize their common love of literature for their September 2015 wooded wedding I knew right away we had to photograph their engagement session in the Indianapolis Central Library. We had the greatest time walking around the amazing library and then downtown Indy. Only to finish up our session at the top of The Sheraton City Centre hotel at sunset.

While attending a band practice with her best friend, Lindsey saw Eric behind the drums the minute she walked in. In efforts to find any reason to talk to him they started playing with a rubber toy together. After they got to talking the two of them really started to hit it off. Eventually they started dating and meeting each other's families didn't come far after that. Then while going on a hike in Turkey Run they uttered the famous three words, "I love you." A year an a half later, on New Years Eve, they decided they were going to be hiking partners for life and set a date for a September wedding in the woods.

With the books, the sunset, and their love combined; a recipe for magic and amazing photos happened during their engagement session. I try to keep my blog posts to 10 - 15 photos but we were in the Central Library... it was hard to just pick 15... so I didn't. Whoops!

Downtown Indianapolis Mass Avenue Sunset Engagement // Jenny & John

THAT ONE TIME I FOUND MY SOUL SISTER AT AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION.

A couple Sunday's ago I had the distinct pleasure of walking around downtown Indianapolis at sunset with Jenny + John. Aside from enjoy the urban sites of our lovely city and capturing some pretty wicked photos; I think I made a new best friend. Both Jenny + John are so awesome but I'm pretty sure Jenny + I are cut from the same cloth. She's pretty incredible, I know why John is so in love with her.

Indianapolis Holliday Park Engagement // Molly & Brian

SPRING IN INDIANA...

Well it's not all beautiful flowers and tall green grass. Yes, that is definitely there. But there is also muddy creeks and rain. But then you get amazing people like Molly + Brian who are willing to trudge through the mud and may or may not slip and fall right before portraits begin. In. The. Mud. Yep. This happened folks. These people are legit. We had the best time walking around Holliday Park in search of greenery and all things spring. But first we happened upon this little island in the middle of the (not so) White River.

Pendleton Rustic Sunset Engagement Session // Mackenzie & Casey

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE COOLEST COUPLE EVER.

Mackenzie + Casey were such a wicked awesome couple. They won a complimentary engagement session at an open house I participated in back in May. I'm so glad they did because they were beyond awesome and fun! And because we did their engagement session and they thought I was totally awesome, I'll be photographing their wedding in September 2015. They were super fun, awesome, sweet, and totally up for anything. My kind of couple. We spent several hours at sunset walking around the open fields and historic downtown area of Pendleton. It was a blast and we got some awesome pictures.

Historic Irvington Engagement // Robert & Scott

WORKING FOR FRIENDS IS NEVER REALLY WORKING

At least, in my opinion it's not. When I help out friends or family with photography services I never feel like I'm truly working. That's not to say that I'm not being paid or working equally as hard. It just doesn't feel like real work.

When I was approached by Robert + Scott to photograph their wedding we only had a mere 90 days until the affair was to take place. And since they had just gotten married when the gay marriage ban was lifted in Indiana they felt like it was silly to do a full blown engagement session. There wasn't much time until the wedding, they'd been partners for 7 years, and they were technically already married (even if Indiana didn't choose to recognize it). But it's so hard for me to see clients go without engagement photos. Trust me, I believe your wedding photos are beyond important. I mean I AM a wedding photographer afterall. But when you look back at your wedding photos it's just going to remind you of that specific day, not necessarily the love and passion you've had for each other every day leading up to that point. I think engagement photos are so special because they're photos of the way you look and dress on an every day basis and it's just the two of you, being you.

Anyways, now that I'm off my soap box we decided to tack on a small engagement session at the last minute. I came over one weeknight after they both got home from work and we took some sweet photos of the two of them at their Historic Irvington house that they have turned into a home. In my opinion, the location was special because it's a place that's been all theirs. And that to me made it perfect.

Downtown Indianapolis Canal Engagement Session // Jane & Sean

HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS...

The place you least exepect to find someone to spend the rest of your life with has to be high school. I mean with all of the peer pressure, stress of getting into college, and body changes it's no wonder that the "high school sweetheart" is slowly becoming more and more uncommon. Let's not forget college too! With more and more students going to college and having access to college all across the world it's no wonder that flames that seemd to burn so strong in high school seem to fizzle out before we even reach our twenties.

But not Jane and Sean...

Carmel Sunset Engagement :: Alli + Rob

OH, THESE TWO...

Let me tell you a little story about Alli + Rob. This past January I photographed Laura + Jon's wedding at The Mavris Arts + Event Center. It was a lovely winter day with tons of awesome people including a wicked fun bridal party. So I was trying t to carry Laura's huge poofy dress up to the third floor of the Mavris so I could hang it up for the dress photo. Here's where Alli came in. Bridesmaid of the year, she jumps up and offers to help me carry the dress and place it where I needed to for the dress photo. Then she so casually says,

"I'm getting married this December and I haven't gotten a photographer yet. I can't wait to see their photos cause I might book with you!"

Awesome. No pressure.

No really. It turned out wonderfully. She saw my same day slideshow. Saw Laura + Jon's wedding photos on Facebook and of course she was able to see me in action throughout the day. Soon after the wedding we sat down for some lunch at Panera and got her day all scheduled out. We booked an engagement session for a lovely evening in May. The weather turned beautiful and the sunset was just gorgeous. I really enjoyed working with them and had so much fun getting to know Alli's fiancé, Rob. I'm really looking forward to their wedding this December. I know it will be a fun time and knowing that my bride, Laura, will be there will make it so much more fun!

Indianapolis Vintage Picnic Engagement :: Kim + Andy

Props, Props, Props.

I love me a good session with props. I just love having stuff for my couples to interact with. Things to set a scene. To tell a story. Of course an engagement session can be very lovely without props. But I do love me a good set of props. And Kim + Andy's vintage picnic themed engagement session was no exception! Kim thought of everything down to bringing food! The session was lovely and I enjoyed spending time with them on a wonderful day in April when the Indiana weather had finally decided to give us a break from the cold, long, hard, winter we had been having.

Kim + Andy were so great to work with. They really interacted with each other and despite the awkwardness of people staring at you while you set up a picnic completely for photos they busted out some pretty adorable amazingness.

courtney + nick :: downtown indianapolis engagement

Oh, where do I begin with this couple?! I have to say, I'm truly blessed, I have the most amazing couples ever! Courtney and Nick are such incredible people. They met at Ball State (Chirp Chirp!!) while they were working at Rec Services. She studied aquatics and he studied exercise science and now they both work for the amazing company, Outside the Box! They're amazing group facilitators working with people with special needs and if I didn't mention before, they're mega good at it!

When Nick told me he was going to propose to Courtney I may have peed my pants a little. (Not literally, I was just really excited!) After all of the excitement of the proposal Courtney asked me to be their photographer for their special day. Which was super amazing to me because although I had known Nick from high school, I didn't really know Courtney all that well. But she's super fun and amazing and we've become great friends through this whole process.

We planned for their engagement session in May in hopes that it would be warmer and nicer out than in April. But, alas, we live in Indiana and the weather can never be counted upon. It was slightly chilly and somewhat dreary outside but we made it work! We did have a wonderful time walking around Downtown Indianapolis. But first we started with their newly adopted doggie, only 8 months old, at the Broad Ripple Art Center!

Considering that she was only 8 months old, she behaved very well. Miss Bailey Mae was very sweet!

cait + colin :: indianapolis camping engagement

Oh where do I begin with this lovely couple!? Cait and I have known each other for around 10 years! It all started when I dated her twin brother back in my freshman year of high school!

It's hard to believe it's been 10 years since I was a freshman in high school! Eek! I think that means I'm getting old!

Anyways, even after her brother and I broke up her and I stayed friends. Naturally I stalked her on Facebook and when Colin proposed I was super excited for them! Then she asked me to photograph their lovely wedding and engagement photos.

The three of us met over some Panera Bread (I've told you guys how much I love carbs haven't I?) and we planned this super cute camping themed engagement session!

Not only am I in love with their session, the props, and them; but I'm pretty sure I had a love affair with their adorable dachshund, Lars.

heather + john :: fort benjamin harrison engagement

They say it's a small world. I'm not sure who "they" is but I think they're probably with Disney. I mean Disney did write that song after all. (Now I'll bet you're hearing, "it's a small world after all!")

Anyways, off of my small world/Disney tangent. It's a small world because when Heather contacted me I swore her name sounded familiar to me. And I swore I went to school with her. And like any good photographer I'm a professional Facebook creeper. Err, *cough*, I mean "investigator." Yeah, that sounds much better than creeper. So I looked her up. Saw she was engaged to John. Saw her profile picutre and said, "I KNOW HER!" Next thing my husband knew I was rapidly flipping through high school yearbooks until I found her senior picture! And there it was, we went to the same high school! And to think, when she contacted me she didn't even know who I was!

Like I said, small world!

So when we decided to do their engagement session she said she wanted something natural and earthy. So we went with the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple and then Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park.

Check out more of their earthy engagement session. It's pretty adorbs.

(And yes, I just said adorbs.)

Although I've only met Bri + Kyle briefly I can already tell their love for each other stretches miles.

Literally.

Bri lives here in Indianapolis while Kyle works as a Graduate Assistant Basketball Coach at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas.

So yeah, miles.

We actually scheduled their engagement session within a couple of days and were able to pull off an amazing urban engagement session in Downtown Indianapolis before he had to leave to go back to Texas!

Check out the rest of their awesome engagement session!

loretta + blake :: kokomo country engagement

Cowboy boots. Wide open spaces. Old barns. Covered bridges. Old Railroad Brides.

These are things Loretta asked to be in her and her fiancée, Blake's country chic Kokomo engagement session. Perfectly curated to match their wedding they had been planning for almost a year.

We met for an afternoon in early April to photograph their loveliness together. Starting at this old broken down railroad bridge. I do love old and broken down things.
